‘Media’ we all are familiar with this term.
It is generally the medium of sharing information among people throughout the globe. It also serves as the intermediate between the government and its people.
Indian media is one of the oldest and largest media in the world and has many types of communications such as newspapers, television, radio, cinema, magazines, and many online platforms. These media sources now cover almost every corner of the world and bring us all kinds of stories. And the stories that it brings us should be fair, reliable and accurate.
The media’s main role is to provide the right information, influence, aware and entertain the common people.
We all must know whether the media is serving the truth or is faking the stories just for our attention. This article will help you know what media is all about and how it works.

IS MEDIA SERVING THE TRUTH?

This must be the first question in everyone’s mind. For anyone who thinks that the answer is yes, I am sorry to burst your bubble.
Today’s government and large corporations are using media as a face that constantly misleads the public. This is evident in the unavoidable practice of media to focus on the manipulators in spite of the real mudda (issue).

The sad reality of news channels is that it has now become a running picture show which has images that only attracts the viewers just for the sake of money.

The breaking news

Most of the time, the news telecasts are realistic but they also exaggerate the stories just the way they want the public to know.
We know that not all reporters are honest as they often fabricate the news and rule out details that would create complications or unresolved problems. This leads to the exaggeration of some unwanted details and the adverse effect of real facts getting ignored.

HOW MEDIA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INFLUENCING PEOPLE’S LIFE?

The main role of the media is to keep people updated with correct information and entertain them. Society is highly influenced by media today, that too in so many ways.
People see a lot of things every day and form their opinions based on what they see. It is the media that shape our lives today. Being the majority audience, the younger generation is influenced the most. As the youth imitates and follows the traits of their role models, whether negative or positive. As media focuses more on negative stories,
some people believe that only the media is responsible for negative traits in society.
It can be clearly seen that the media has changed the way of communication, way of living and our way of thinking.

SUPERIOR POWER INFLUENCE ON MEDIA!

To understand the media, we need to understand the political environment in which it works. Today’s media is highly influenced by superior powers like political leaders or the industrial leaders which is true up to a major extent.

Most of the media now get paid to cover the political leaders and their propaganda. Media’s importance and influence in a democratic society are world-renowned but superior powers have now taken over the media. As an important pillar of democracy the press needs to be independent to truly serve its purpose without any bias.

ARE ALL MEDIA HOUSES “PAID” OR IS THERE ANY INDEPENDENT MEDIA STILL ALIVE?

Most of the media houses in our nation are in the pockets of superior powers.

The “individual journalists” and “specific media organizations” such as newspapers, magazines, and TV channels benefit majorly from paid news.
In this situation, independent media is really important for a nation as it exists without any government or corporate control.
The independent media documents the news in-depth and without biased opinions. It provides individuals with the facts supported by evidence.
There are some media houses that work as independent media and strive to show the bitter truth in front of society but the irony is that they are very few. And the one that exists is suppressed by the media giants. So, the truth barely finds it’s way to the masses.

HOW A NEW FORM OF UNCONVENTIONAL MEDIA EVOLVING NOWADAYS?

The days are gone when everyone categorically found time to read the important news in the morning. It has become a trend now that people usually read the news on different apps on their smartphones.
Nobody now has patience and time to read the whole article and just prefer reading the headlines.
Social media is active in covering big topics which is also good as most of the people today are indulged in social media. Moreover, these days memes are born which are funny and relatable. The use of memes is something new for ad campaigns and fresh strategies chosen by the brands.
Instead of newspapers and magazines, Social posts have more ability to reach masses.

HOW SHOULD MEDIA OPERATE?

People need to be informed about everything but the media should not feed them the biased stories. It should not exaggerate the stories and should be realistic. The journalists should not frame the news for their personal gain.
They should cover more of the social causes instead of covering and working for the political leaders. They should not forget that their stories are going to reach thousands of people and influence them it is shown.
So, the media needs to be:
• Independent
• Transparent
• Unbiased
• Truthful
• Informative

SOME COMMON TIPS TO IDENTIFY REAL AND FAKE NEWS

Fake news is not new but what’s new is difficulty in identifying the real and the fake one. People easily believe what they are shown and they make their opinions on it and become judgmental.

Social media has given the right to every individual to bring forward their viewpoints. Anyone can publish their thoughts and opinions. But in this many people do not check the links from where the news is coming and just make anything go viral within seconds.

There is a lot we can do to spot fake news like:
. Comparing the same news from different sources
• Check the source from where the news is coming
• See who is reporting the story
• Develop a critical mindset
• Check for the fake images
• Test your knowledge

In the end, I would like to sum up with one quote

Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,

Your words become your actions,

Your actions become your habits,

Your habits become your values,

Your values become your destiny.

Mahatma Gandhi

Be wise in choosing what you believe and what is right as it is not always what we believe is right and what is right we believe! THINK !!!
